Ethiopia Signed MoU with Somaliland to use Berbera Port
In a momentous start to the new year, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took to Twitter on January 1, 2024, expressing gratitude with the words, "What else can be said but to thank God!" This tweet marked the announcement of a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing between Ethiopia and Somaliland, paving the way for a sea gate on the Red Sea.
The MoU signed with Somaliland involves the leasing of a sea
port and 20 kilometers of land to Ethiopia, signifying a groundbreaking moment
in diplomatic relations. The tweet by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed suggests the
magnitude of the achievement and the positive sentiments surrounding this
historic agreement.
Simultaneously, January 1, 2024, became a day of double celebration for Ethiopia as the nation officially joined BRICS, a prominent association of major emerging national economies, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
As the news spread across Ethiopia, the nation erupted in
celebrations. Citizens from various parts of the country expressed their joy
and pride in the achievements, both in joining BRICS and in establishing a
crucial sea gate through the agreement with Somaliland.
The BRICS membership positions Ethiopia as a key player in
the global economic landscape, providing opportunities for enhanced trade,
collaboration, and economic growth. The dual celebration underscores Ethiopia's
growing prominence on the international stage and its commitment to fostering
positive relationships with neighboring nations.
However, amidst the celebrations, the MoU with Somaliland has
triggered tensions with Somalia, as it challenges the status quo in the region.
The recall of the Somali Ambassador and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's
address to the Parliament underscore the geopolitical implications of this
agreement.
As Ethiopia charts a new course with its BRICS membership
and forges closer ties with Somaliland, the international community will
closely monitor the evolving dynamics in the Horn of Africa. The celebrations
within Ethiopia, tinged with diplomatic complexities, highlight the delicate
balance countries navigate in pursuit of both regional influence and global
partnerships.
