Ethiopian Airlines to Build new Airport City for $5 Billion
Ethiopian Airlines, in a strategic move to meet the
escalating demands of its burgeoning customer base, has formally announced its
ambitious endeavor to realize the construction of the groundbreaking 'Ethiopian
Airlines City' within a stipulated timeframe of four years. This monumental
initiative, spearheaded by Lema Yadecha, the distinguished Chief Executive of
the business sector at Ethiopian Airlines, signifies a pivotal response to the
imperative necessity engendered by the remarkable growth trajectory experienced
by the airline in recent times.
The conceptualization of this visionary project, aptly
referred to as the "Airport City," has been meticulously devised to
not only address the immediate needs of the airline but also to serve as a
proactive measure in preempting potential challenges that may arise from the
unprecedented expansion observed within the aviation sector. Yadecha elucidated
that the absence of the envisaged 'airport city' could potentially subject
Ethiopian Airlines to formidable tests in navigating its accelerated ascension
within the industry.
The financial underpinning of this monumental undertaking is
nothing short of substantial, with a colossal budgetary allocation amounting to
an impressive 5 billion dollars. This considerable investment is poised to
transform into a state-of-the-art facility projected to accommodate a
staggering 100 million passengers on an annual basis, attesting to the scale
and ambition characterizing the Ethiopian Airlines City.
The genesis of this transformative project is slated to
unfold in the Oromia region, strategically situated just beyond the confines of
Bishoftu city. The chosen location signifies a judicious selection, aligning
with the airline's overarching vision to foster comprehensive development.
Forecasts for the 'Airport City' anticipate the inclusion of avant-garde
amenities, encompassing modern hotels, upscale apartments, an expansive
duty-free shopping center, and a cutting-edge cargo logistics center.
As part of the meticulous planning process, Ethiopian
Airlines is diligently advancing preparations to embark on the construction of
the inaugural phase of the 'Airport City.' In accordance with industry best
practices, a comprehensive feasibility study is underway, meticulously
examining the project's viability and potential socio-economic impact.
Subsequent to the completion of this critical evaluation, the airline is poised
to initiate the procurement process through the issuance of an international tender,
marking the next pivotal milestone in the realization of the Ethiopian Airlines City.
